An Introduction to Absolute Wonder Woman

Absolute Wonder Woman debuted in October of 2024 as part of DC’s wildly successful new “Absolute” line, written by Kelly Thompson with art by Hayden Sherman, lettering by Becca Carey, and colours by Jordie Bellaire. #wonderwoman 1/6

The series represents a new reimagining of the iconic character for DC comics, but, unlike previous iterations, one committed to alternate takes on the character, her world, and her place within it. 2/6

The series received the 2025 Eisner Award for Best New Series, thus achieving the highest level of both critical and commercial success in mainstream comics basically from the outset. 3/6

Where previous iterations of the character showcased an empathetic will moulded by the love and care of an amazon paradise, this version of Diana is instead, in the words of Thompson “radicalized by deep injustice.” 4/6

The series thus unfolds as a new beginning for a classic character but also a bit of autocriticism through the juxtaposition of this “radical” new Diana with the many previous takes on the Amazon Princess over the course of nearly a century of Wonder Woman comics. 5/6

What we have to discuss then, in the weeks ahead, is a popular and adored iteration of one of the most recognizable comics characters in human history – a noteworthy departure that speaks to the past, present, and future simultaneously. 6/6
